Being a classic furniture item, a dining room table has not changed its shape over the centuries: it's usually either square or round. A square or rectangular dining room table is very practical in terms of seating space; it may also be situated next to the wall, as well as in the center of the room. A round dining room table encourages communication and promotes the exchange of ideas. It is also great for a large dining room and looks fabulous almost in every interior style. If you have enough dining room space, you may opt for an oval dining room table, which provides enough room for each of the guests or family members to feel comfortable (recent studies show that an average person needs at least 70 cm of private space to feel at ease in the company of others). Modern round dining room tables may be extending and can be easily transformed into larger oval ones.
A round table is also a great solution, if you have small children; it's safer, because it has no sharp edges. Despite the fact that the shape of the dining table tends to stay conventional, contemporary designers often play with the shape and number of table legs: traditionally, a round table surface is perched upon one leg in the shape of a pillar. Nevertheless, modern design trends feature round tables with multiple table legs, fancy looking and great for an unconventional interior.
If you want to buy a round dining room table, first thing you need to consider is its size. You cannot accommodate as much guests or family members at a round table as at a rectangular-shaped one, so take into account the amount of your available space and the number of people your table is meant for. The next thing, which is very important, is the material your dining room table has to be made of. Contemporary round dining room tables may be made of wood, metal and glass, or a combination of all of the above. If you opt for glass dining table, make sure it's solid and shatterproof. Any material you choose for your dining room table should be durable and heat resistant and shouldn`t require a lot of maintenance. You may be tempted to go for cheaper options, especially, if you are on a limited budget. If so, be prepared that your round dining room table will be more prone to scratches, stain and deformations and will serve you for only several years.
