Why hallways are harder on furniture than they look

Construction beats finish

Three construction details decide more than the finish does. The first is whether the base of each compartment is a separate sealed panel or the same board as the carcass with an exposed edge at the door line. The second is whether the back board is a full thickness panel rebated into the carcass or a thin sheet pinned to the rear, since a thin back is the first thing to bow when it takes on damp. The third is ventilation, meaning slots, open backs, louvred doors or a deliberate gap at the plinth.
