British households have started treating furniture the way they treat cars: as an asset with a residual value rather than a single transaction. Our 2026 report concludes that resale potential is determined at the point of manufacture, not the point of sale, and rests on three things. Whether the piece can be dismantled and reassembled without losing rigidity, whether its materials survive a house move, and, for upholstery, whether it still carries the permanent fire safety label that the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire Safety) Regulations 1988 require for supply in the course of business. That last point removes more sofas from the reuse market than damage ever does, because households cut the labels off. We set out which construction types tolerate repeated moves, which categories reuse well and which do not, and why standard sizing widens the pool of future users.
