The Storage Basket Price Index 2026: Five Years of UK Data
A price index needs a measured series, and for UK storage baskets none exists: the Office for National Statistics tracks household furnishings inflation as a broad category, not by individual item. Furniture in Fashion's 2026 report therefore contains no prices or index values, and instead reports what five years of specifying the category shows. Baskets have moved from decorative to structural, bought to make open shelving, alcoves, under stair voids and under bed space function as real storage. Weave density is the best predictor of lifespan, with tight seagrass, water hyacinth and rattan holding shape while paper rope over a frame softens at the corners. Handles are the usual failure point, and integrated woven handles outlast stitched or riveted fabric loops.
