Britain's rustic palette is decided by surface, not shade. Our 2026 assessment finds that the same warm brown reads as characterful on sawn oak and flat on smooth laminate, because textured surfaces scatter light into hundreds of small tonal variations that the eye reads as depth. No national dataset records household colour preference, so this report ranks nothing. Instead it sets out how three groups, timber browns, chalky lime derived off whites and muted clay, moss and slate accents, behave under British daylight, which is diffuse for much of the year and flattens the shadow the look depends on. Cool weathered timbers drift grey in north facing rooms, while honey and red undertones hold their character.
