Is a shoe bench with coat hooks right for your porch?

For most UK porches and small entrance areas, a shoe bench with coat hooks is a very efficient choice. It gives you somewhere to sit while you pull off boots, a shelf beneath for everyday shoes and hooks above for coats and bags, all within roughly the width of the bench. That keeps the walls and floor elsewhere clear, which matters in a space that is often less than a couple of metres across.

Our shoe racks and benches UK sale include combined designs with hooks as well as standalone benches. For wider entrance ideas, our modern hallway furniture UK range covers mirrors, umbrella stands and storage that work alongside them.

Understanding your porch

British porches vary enormously. Some are enclosed glazed boxes added to the front of a semi detached house. Others are a recessed area inside the front door of a terrace, or a small lobby with an inner door leading to the hall. Each has its own constraints.

Enclosed glazed porches can get warm in summer and cold in winter, and sunlight can fade finishes over time. Lobby style porches between two doors are often narrow and need furniture that does not interfere with either door. Open entrances with no porch at all need the bench to work as a buffer between outside and the living space.

Spend a few days noticing how your porch is used. Where do people drop bags? Where do wet coats end up? Which shoes come off at the door and which go upstairs? These habits should shape the design.

Measuring the space

Take three key measurements before you choose:

  • Wall width: the clear stretch of wall available, allowing for door frames, light switches and any radiator.
  • Usable depth: how far the bench can come into the space while still leaving room to open both doors and walk past comfortably.
  • Height to the ceiling or window sill: important for combined units with tall backs, and for positioning hooks in glazed porches.

Most benches are somewhere around 30 to 40cm deep, which suits many porches. If your space is very narrow, a shallower bench with a single shoe shelf is better than a deep one that leaves you squeezing past.

All in one unit or bench plus wall hooks?

Combined hall stands

A single unit with a bench at the bottom and a back panel with hooks at the top is quick to set up and looks unified. Many designs also include a small shelf at the top for hats and gloves. The frame keeps coats neatly contained above the bench, so they do not spread along the wall.

The downside is flexibility. The hook height is fixed, and in a porch with a low window sill, a tall back panel may block light or not fit at all.

Separate bench and hooks

A standalone bench with wall mounted hooks lets you set the hooks at exactly the right height for your household and your wall. You can also choose a longer hook rail than the bench if you have plenty of coats. Our modern coat racks UK include wall mounted rails in timber and metal that pair well with a separate bench.

This approach suits glazed porches, walls with sockets or switches in awkward places and families who want hooks at two heights, one for adults and one for children.

Materials that cope with British weather

Porches take the brunt of rain, mud and sometimes snow. The materials you choose need to cope.

Lacquered or oiled solid wood is sturdy and repairable, but it should not be left under puddles of water. Painted finishes look fresh and are easy to wipe, though chips can expose the board beneath if the bench is knocked often. Powder coated metal is very resilient and suits modern or industrial schemes. Bamboo and slatted designs let air circulate, which helps damp shoes dry.

Whatever the material, a removable boot tray on the lower shelf is worth having. It catches water and grit and can be emptied and rinsed outside. For more on how timber finishes respond to damp footwear, see our guide on wooden shoe storage and wet shoes in UK homes.

Getting the hook height right

Hooks that are too low leave long coats sitting on the bench, which makes it unusable as a seat. Hooks that are too high are awkward to reach, especially for children.

Hang your longest coat on a door to see where its hem falls, then set the hooks so that coat clears the bench seat. For many adults, hooks somewhere around 160 to 180cm from the floor work well. Add a second lower row for children at a height they can reach, which encourages them to hang up their own coats.

Leave enough space between hooks for bulky winter coats. Crowding hooks together means coats overlap and fall off.

Ideas for awkward porches

The very small lobby

If two doors leave little wall space, consider a narrow bench at the end wall rather than the side, or a wall mounted fold down seat with hooks above. Keep everything shallow and fix hooks high to leave the lower wall clear.

The glazed porch

Where walls are mostly glass, place the bench against the solid wall of the house and fix hooks to the wall above it. Choose materials that tolerate sunlight, and add a blind if the porch gets very warm, which protects coats and shoes as well as the furniture.

The porch with a radiator

A slatted or open bench can sit near a radiator, leaving a clear gap for warm air to rise. This helps wet coats and shoes dry overnight, but never cover the radiator completely.

Family porches

In a busy household, the porch has to cope with more shoes, more coats and more traffic. A few ideas help:

  • Give each person a hook and a section of shelf, so items are easy to find in a rush.
  • Use baskets on the shoe shelf for small children’s shoes, which otherwise get lost.
  • Keep a separate bag or box for sports kit, so it does not take over the bench.
  • Store spare umbrellas and dog leads on a single dedicated hook.

Shoes and coats are the main sources of hallway clutter in many homes, as our UK hallway clutter survey discusses, so it pays to plan generously for both.

Seasonal routines

A porch works best when it holds only what is needed now. In autumn, bring wellies and heavier coats down and move sandals and light jackets away. In spring, do the reverse. Wash the boot tray, wipe down the bench and check hook fixings while you do it.

A quick weekly reset, putting stray shoes back and moving post and bags inside, keeps the space welcoming.

Planning for dogs and muddy walks

For many households, the porch is where the dog walk begins and ends. Leads, harnesses, towels and muddy paws all arrive at the door, and a little planning keeps them from overwhelming the bench.

Set aside one sturdy hook at the end of the coat rail for leads and harnesses, so they are always in the same place. A small basket on the lower shelf can hold poo bags, a ball launcher and a spare collar. Keep an old towel on a hook nearby, ready to dry paws before the dog heads into the house.

Boots worn for muddy walks deserve their own spot. A deep boot tray beside or beneath the bench catches the worst of the dirt and can be rinsed outside. If your porch is large enough, a separate wellington rack keeps tall boots upright, which helps them dry and stops them toppling over onto everyday shoes.

Choose a bench cushion or seat that copes with damp coats and the occasional wet dog. Faux leather, wipeable fabric or a plain timber top are easier to live with than pale upholstery. A washable runner on the floor protects tiles or boards and can go straight into the machine after a wet week.

Finishing touches

A sturdy, washable doormat inside the door captures much of the dirt before it reaches the bench. A small mirror by the hooks helps for last minute checks, and a cushion on the bench, in a wipeable or removable cover, makes it more comfortable. At Furniture in Fashion, we stock porch and hallway storage in a range of sizes and finishes, with free delivery to most UK mainland postcodes.

Frequently asked questions

How deep should a porch shoe bench be?

Most work well somewhere between 30 and 40cm deep. In narrow porches, choose the shallower end so you can still open both doors and walk past comfortably.

How high should coat hooks be above a shoe bench?

High enough that your longest coat clears the seat. For many adults this is around 160 to 180cm from the floor, with a lower row for children if needed.

Can I use a wooden shoe bench in a cold porch?

Yes, provided the wood is well sealed and you use a boot tray for wet shoes. Avoid leaving standing water on the surface.

Is a combined hall stand better than a separate bench and hooks?

A combined stand is neat and quick to set up. A separate bench with wall hooks gives more flexibility over height and length, which suits glazed porches and family homes.
