Wardrobe Designs Have Undergone Some Changes

You have to have attained a “certain age” to remember when wardrobes  were the only tasteful solution for storing clothing. If you are at least as old as me, you remember them as where your dresses, slacks and shirts hung, and the sweet smell of cedar used to keep the moths at bay. Like most things in the world, wardrobe designs have undergone quite a few changes since then. Today’s modern wardrobe can still hold clothes, or it can hold your television with DVD and other accessories. It could hold your “special clothes” like a wedding dress or tux, or it could hold your desktop computer and all of its accessories. There are wardrobes for holding, of all things, jewelry. Of course, most of us probably don’t have enough of the sparkly stuff to fill one of those. While most of them are still done in wood, you won’t find very many with the fine hand carving and intricate workmanship of their Victorian heyday. The Pedestal Side Table Makes A Good Neighbor

A side table can sit by the “side” of a bed, a couch, a chair or, I suppose, even the fridge. When you are using a table next to another piece of furniture, it needs to be a good neighbor. Often, I find that tables situated on four legs tend to make the space next to a fine sofa or an elegant chair look cluttered and full. A good pedestal side table , however, sits gracefully upon a single elegant column and can prove to be quite a good neighbor indeed.   The idea of putting tables on a pedestal is ancient. Some of my favorites are from the Greek Revival School of furniture . Today, modern designers are taking up the tune of this old song and creating sweet new melodies. The artists used to starve in sparsely furnished, drafty garrets (attics), or so we are taught in art history. Today’s artist, thank goodness, has better sense. While they may think with the right side of their brains most of the time, these creative geniuses aren’t so wrapped up in their work that they fail to appreciate the need for some basic comforts. Instead of damp, dowdy garrets, many of the artists I know live in fashionable lofts or townhouses filled with trendy, upscale art studio furniture  that makes living and/or working in their studio, quite stylish and comfortable. From easels to paint palettes to pottery wheels, some of the basics haven’t changed. Other more modern things have simply joined the ranks of the “basics” of the artist’s trade.
