Best Garden Ideas to Get You Ready For Winter

Best Garden Ideas to Get You Ready For Winter

Winter is a difficult time for gardeners. The cold and wet weather makes it hard for amateur gardeners to motivate themselves to go out and tend their garden. Most garden chores are put on hold until the spring. If you are one of those gardeners, it is still a good idea to prepare your garden for the winter, as this will ensure your garden is ready and healthy come the warmer months of the year. Trim your hedges If you have garden hedges, autumn is the best time to trim them. This will create a tighter structure that can withstand the more extreme weather conditions. If you let your hedge grow out in the autumn, come spring you will have to do double the work as you deal with the damage from strong winds and snow. Clean out pots and keep them in storage Even your sturdiest pots can crack if you leave them outside and filled with soil during the winter. Remove all leftover soil from your pots, wash them out, and then store them for spring. Bring your potted plants indoors to prevent the pots from breaking. This is one of the most common, and costly, mistakes gardeners make. Get your plants ready Gladioli, tuberoses,...

Students from Lahti University design furniture for displacement victims

Students from Lahti University design furniture for displacement victims

The ongoing refugee crisis and the effects of natural disaster have become increasingly important topics for designers in recent years. This is why it interested us to read Dezeen magazine’s report this week about 10 students from Lahti University of Applied Sciences in Finland and their designs for a collection of essential furniture items for victims of displacement. The designs are the fruit of a research project called Rehome, which gave students from the school’s Institute of Design the responsibility of creating temporary products for those suddenly forced to leave their home without belongings.   “Manufactured automatically with the lowest costs possible”   One of the students, Iida Nordgren, said to Dezeen: “The main idea behind Rehome was to design temporary products that could provide an answer to humans’ primary needs when suddenly rehoused. The furniture designed within Rehome can be manufactured automatically with the lowest costs possible. For example, a cardboard bed can be manufactured around 3,500 pieces in one hour – and no tools are required for assembling.”   The students devised a list of things that they described as catering to “the most urgent human needs”, which they identified as sleeping arrangements, privacy and social interaction. This led to their decision to use...

Are microflats the answer to London’s affordable housing shortage?

Are microflats the answer to London’s affordable housing shortage?

One of the greatest debates of our times has undoubtedly been about how we can tackle the increasing shortage of affordable residential property across the UK – particularly in the most in-demand city centres such as London. Could the emergence of microflats be the answer? That question played on our minds recently as we read about the regeneration specialists U+I, and their claim that the development of tiny flats in areas of currently largely unaffordable housing provision could help to revive communities presently being “hollowed out”.   Wealthy buyers continuing to acquire homes in the capital   Anyone who walks around certain areas of central London these days will probably have some sympathy with the oft-voiced frustration that rich investors from outside the capital are increasingly snapping up property that is then often being left empty for months. Indeed, a report last month commissioned by the Mayor of London stated that foreign investors purchased 13.2% of all property in the capital sold between 2014 and 2016. Meanwhile, according to the Government’s latest English Housing Survey, home ownership levels across England are at a 30-year low, and the country hasn’t had this many private renters since the 1960s.   So, should a new generation of hardworking professionals for whom...
