Plastic garden sheds do not fail the way buyers expect. The common fear is that the panels will go brittle and crack after a few British summers. In practice the first visible change is almost always colour: the surface loses saturation, darker shades shift towards a chalky flatness, and the faces that catch the most sun change faster than those that do not. How ultraviolet degrades a polymer

Stabilisers are the specification that is never printed

Manufacturers add ultraviolet stabilisers to the polymer during production. These work by absorbing ultraviolet energy or by interrupting the chemical reaction that degrades the chains. The quantity and type of stabiliser used is the single largest variable in how a plastic shed ages, and it is essentially never stated on a product listing.

What a buyer can do instead is read the warranty. A manufacturer willing to warrant a building against fading and structural failure for an extended period is making a statement about its stabiliser package that costs it money if it is wrong. The specific terms matter more than the headline period: check whether fading is covered at all, whether the cover is pro rated, and what conditions void it. This is the most useful proxy available.

What three British summers actually does

The UK receives comparatively modest ultraviolet intensity, concentrated in a short summer season and frequently diffused by cloud. Install it on a genuinely level base, because uneven support puts permanent stress into panels and joints that later become the failure points.
