Plastic Shed UV Test: Fading & Brittleness After 3 UK Summers

Plastic garden sheds lose colour long before they lose strength, and the fear that panels will go brittle after a few British summers is largely misplaced, according to a new materials led analysis from Furniture in Fashion. The report explains that ultraviolet degradation of polypropylene and high density polyethylene is a surface process working inwards, so a faded shed is not necessarily a weakened one, and that embrittlement shows first at fixing points, hinges and catches where stress concentrates. It identifies the ultraviolet stabiliser package added during manufacture as the largest variable between one shed and another, notes that this is almost never stated on a listing, and recommends reading the warranty terms on fading as the most useful available proxy. The analysis also finds that thermal cycling and an uneven base contribute as much to long term failure as sunlight, and that pale neutral colours disguise weathering best....
