Furniture rarely fails all at once. It fails at one specific point, usually a joint, a fixing, a mechanism or a surface finish, and the rest of the piece is still sound when it goes. That is the single most useful thing to understand about furniture longevity, because it means lifespan is largely a question of which component is carrying the load and whether that component can be maintained or replaced.

If there is one habit worth adopting, it is periodically tightening fixings on anything bolted together.
