Step Three: Attach the Swivel Plate to the Seat
Place the seat upside down on your protected surface. Align the swivel plate with the pre drilled holes, making sure the socket faces away from the seat. Start all four screws by hand, turning each one two or three threads, before tightening any of them fully. This lets the plate settle into position rather than being pulled crooked by the first screw.
Tighten in a diagonal pattern: top left, bottom right, top right, bottom left. Use hand pressure only. The screws thread into timber or MDF, and a power screwdriver will strip that thread in a fraction of a second. When all four are snug, spin the plate to check the bearing turns freely and that no screw head is fouling it.
If your stool has a backrest that fixes separately, fit it now while the seat is easy to handle. Backrest bolts often pass through the seat frame from underneath, so access is far better before the column is on.
Step Four: Join Seat to Column
This is the step where a second pair of hands helps. Keep the base on the floor, lift the seat assembly, and lower the swivel plate socket onto the top of the column. On gas lift stools the taper does the work: line it up, push down, then sit on the stool once and let your weight lock the taper. On threaded designs, turn the seat clockwise until it stops, then check nothing is cross threaded.
Some models bolt the seat plate to a flange on the column instead. If so, insert all bolts loosely, check the seat is square to the base, then tighten fully. A seat fitted at a slight angle looks fine until you push the stool under a bar and notice it does not sit parallel to the counter edge.
Step Five: Fit the Footring
If the footring is a separate part, it usually clamps around the column with a split collar and one or two bolts. Set the height before tightening. As a guide, the footring wants to sit roughly 400mm to 450mm below the seat, so an average adult can rest their feet with a slight bend at the knee. Too high and knees are cramped, too low and it never gets used.
Check the ring is level by eye from a step back, since a tilted footring is surprisingly noticeable across a room. Then tighten the collar firmly, because a footring takes a lot of force from people pushing themselves up.
Step Six: Test Before You Use It
Stand the stool up and press down hard on the seat with both hands. Nothing should shift. Spin the seat several full rotations and listen for grinding, which would suggest debris in the bearing or a screw head catching. On a gas lift, cycle the seat from lowest to highest twice to check the lever works smoothly in both directions.
Then push the stool under the counter to check clearances. You want a small gap between the top of the seat and the underside of the worktop so the stool tucks away, and enough room above your thighs when seated. If it feels tight, adjust the gas lift now rather than living with it.
Common Assembly Mistakes
Four errors account for most problems. Fitting the swivel plate upside down, which prevents the column seating. Fully tightening one screw before starting the others, which pulls the plate out of alignment. Using the longer screws in the seat plate, which punctures the upholstery. And overtightening into MDF, which strips the thread and leaves a seat that loosens repeatedly.

Aftercare Once It Is Built
Retighten every fixing after the first two weeks of use. New stools settle, and that initial retighten prevents most of the creaks that appear a few months in.
