Checking Whether the Stool Can Be Cut
Not every stool tolerates shortening. Look at four things before starting.
The footrest. If the stool has a footrest ring or rail, shortening the legs brings it closer to the floor. Removing 5cm from a stool with a footrest 20cm off the ground leaves it at 15cm, which is close enough to catch heels. Above about 6cm of reduction, the footrest usually becomes the limiting factor rather than the legs.
Leg taper and splay. Legs that taper towards the floor get thicker as you cut up them, which changes the look. Splayed legs get closer together at floor level as they shorten, which reduces the stability footprint. Both are acceptable in small amounts and noticeable in large ones.
Joint positions. If a stretcher or rail meets the leg close to the bottom, cutting through or near that joint will weaken the frame. Keep the cut at least 3cm clear of any joint.
Construction. Hollow tubular metal legs can be shortened. Cast bases, single pedestal columns and gas lift mechanisms cannot. If the stool has a gas lift, adjust it rather than cutting anything, and if the range does not reach low enough, the stool is the wrong one for the job. Marking the Cut Line Accurately
Accuracy here decides the result. Turn the stool upside down on a flat surface such as a kitchen worktop or a level board, so the four leg ends are all resting on the same plane.
Set a combination square or a marking gauge to the amount you want to remove, measuring from the leg end upwards. Scribe a line all the way around each leg, not just on one face. On round legs, wrap a strip of paper around the leg with its edges aligned and mark along it, which gives a perfectly square line.
Double check every mark against the others before cutting. Measure from the seat frame down to each line as a cross check, because measuring from the leg end assumes the legs are currently equal, and on an older stool they may not be.
Wrap masking tape or low tack painter’s tape around each leg with its edge on the cut line. The tape supports the timber fibres and prevents the finish from chipping as the saw enters.
Cutting Timber Legs
Use a fine tooth saw: a tenon saw, a Japanese pull saw or a mitre saw all work. Avoid a coarse rip saw, which tears the fibres.
Clamp the leg if you can, and cut on the waste side of the line rather than through the middle of it. Keep the blade square to the leg in both planes, and let the saw do the work rather than pushing it. A mitre saw or a mitre box gives the squarest result and is worth borrowing if you have four legs to do.
Cut all four legs before testing anything. Turning the stool over halfway through tells you nothing useful.
Cutting Metal Legs
Tubular steel legs need a hacksaw with a fine blade of 24 to 32 teeth per inch, or a rotary tool with a cutting disc. A pipe cutter gives the cleanest square cut on round tube if the wall is not too thick.
Cut slowly and let the blade cool. Rushing overheats the blade and burns the chrome or powder coat finish above the cut, which is difficult to disguise. File the cut end square, then remove the burr from inside the tube with a round file so the new floor protector seats properly.
Bare cut steel will rust. Touch in the cut end with a suitable metal primer or paint before fitting the protector, particularly on a stool that lives in a kitchen where mopping is frequent.
Finishing and Levelling
Sand the cut ends flat, working through 120 then 180 grit on timber, and chamfer the outer edge very slightly so the leg does not chip when the stool is dragged. Match the finish if the cut has exposed bare timber: a coat of the nearest wax, oil or varnish is usually enough on a surface nobody sees directly.
Refit the original glides, felt pads or plastic feet. If they were nailed in, use new nails rather than reusing bent ones. Nail centrally, since an off centre glide is itself a cause of rocking.
Now test on a genuinely flat floor. Any rock means one leg is slightly long. Identify it by pressing each leg in turn, then sand the offender in small amounts, testing between each pass. Sanding is the right tool for this stage, not the saw.

Cutting is permanent, and it is often not the best answer.
If the mismatch is small, a thicker seat pad on a slightly low stool raises it by 3cm or so and costs nothing in structural terms.
If the mismatch is large, changing the stool rather than the height usually produces a better looking result.
