The best place for a computer desk in an alcove is usually the recess closest to a window and a power socket, and furthest from the main seating or TV, so you get natural light and a little separation from relaxing areas. Choose a desk that fits the alcove width with a small gap either side, and no deeper than the chimney breast projects, so it sits flush and looks built in. Shelving and a wall light above complete the space.

Our compact computer desks UK include widths that suit typical alcoves, and you can find matching storage across our home office furniture UK sale collection. Below we look at how to choose the alcove, measure it properly and make it work day to day.

Why alcoves make good desk spaces

An alcove is naturally framed on three sides by walls, which gives a desk a sense of enclosure that helps with concentration. It also keeps the workspace visually separate from the rest of the room, so the desk feels like a dedicated study area rather than furniture pushed against a wall.

Because the desk sits within the recess, it takes no extra floor space in the main part of the room. In living rooms, where floor area is shared by sofas, coffee tables and a TV unit, that matters a great deal.

Choosing which alcove to use

Most chimney breasts have an alcove on each side. Before deciding, consider these points for each one.

Natural light

If one alcove is next to a window, it will usually be the brighter option. Light falling from the side onto the desk is comfortable for screen work and reading. An alcove in a darker corner can still work, but you will rely more on artificial light.

Power and connections

Check which alcove has sockets, and whether there is a telephone or broadband point nearby if you use a wired connection. Running cables across the chimney breast or behind a sofa is untidy and can be a trip hazard.

The TV and seating

In many living rooms, the TV sits on or beside the chimney breast. If so, a desk in one alcove may be in the line of sight from the sofa. Some people like this, as it keeps the room connected. Others prefer the alcove furthest from the main seating so work is less visible in the evening.

Traffic and doors

Avoid an alcove beside a door that opens towards it or one that sits on the main route through the room. You need space to pull out the chair without blocking anyone.

Measuring an alcove accurately

Alcoves in older homes are rarely truly square, even though they look it. Walls lean, plaster bulges and skirting boards vary in depth. Measure carefully before choosing a desk.

  • Width: measure across the alcove at the back, middle and front, and at floor level and desk height. Use the smallest measurement.
  • Depth: measure from the back wall to the front face of the chimney breast. This tells you how deep the desk can be while sitting flush.
  • Skirting: note the depth of skirting boards on the back and side walls, as they can stop a desk from sitting tight to the wall.
  • Obstacles: mark the position of sockets, radiators, pipes and any picture rail or dado rail.

Allow a gap of at least 1cm to 2cm on each side so the desk can slide in easily. If the alcove is wider than standard desks, a desk with open sides looks neater than one with solid panels that leave a visible gap.

Choosing the right desk size

Alcove widths vary considerably between houses, but many fall somewhere between 80cm and 120cm. A desk that fills most of the width looks fitted, while one that is too narrow can look lost.

Depth is equally important. A desk that projects beyond the chimney breast breaks the clean line and can feel awkward. For laptop work, 45cm to 50cm is often enough. If you use a monitor, aim for 55cm to 60cm, but check that this does not extend too far beyond the chimney breast face.

Simple designs with slim legs or a floating look suit alcoves well. Heavy pedestals on both sides can make the space feel cramped and limit legroom.

Using the space above the desk

The wall space above an alcove desk is one of its biggest advantages. Floating shelves running the full width of the alcove create a fitted, bookcase effect and keep the desk surface clear. Space the lowest shelf at least 40cm above the desk top so you have room for a monitor and lamp.

If you prefer freestanding storage, slim shelving can sit on the desk or in the alcove beside it. Our modern shelving units UK include narrow designs that fit recesses neatly. Style the shelves with a mix of books, storage boxes and a few decorative pieces, keeping heavier items on the lower shelves.

Lighting an alcove desk

Alcoves can be shadowy, especially when shelves above block some of the ceiling light. Wall lights are a tidy solution, as they free up desk space and give focused light where you need it. Our wall lights UK include adjustable designs that can be angled down onto the desk for work and turned towards the wall for a softer glow in the evening.

LED strip lighting under the lowest shelf is another option, lighting the desk evenly without glare. Choose warm white for living rooms and bedrooms.

Radiators, fireplaces and heat

If there is a radiator in the alcove, avoid placing a desk directly over it, as this traps heat and can affect the finish of the desk over time. Either choose the other alcove or position the desk so the radiator remains clear.

Working fireplaces and wood burners also produce a lot of heat. Keep the desk and any papers a safe distance from the hearth and the stove itself, and avoid placing electronics where they will be exposed to high temperatures. If the fireplace is purely decorative, this is less of a concern.

Balancing the opposite alcove

A desk in one alcove can leave the room feeling lopsided. To restore balance, repeat some element in the other alcove: matching shelving, a similar wall light or a cabinet in the same finish as the desk. This creates symmetry around the chimney breast and makes the desk feel part of a planned scheme.

Some people place a desk in one alcove and a reading chair with a lamp in the other, giving the room a work zone and a relaxation zone either side of the fireplace.

If you are planning both a TV unit and a desk around a fireplace, our article on TV units with fireplaces in small UK rooms explores how to balance the chimney breast area without overcrowding it.

Choosing a chair for an alcove

An alcove desk sets limits on the chair as well as the desk. Because the side walls are close, a chair with wide arms may knock against the plaster or stop you sitting close enough to type comfortably. A compact task chair with low or no arms usually works best. Swivel bases make it easier to get in and out of the recess without dragging the chair across the floor.

Think about how the chair looks when it is pushed in. In a living room or bedroom, an upholstered seat that echoes the colours of nearby soft furnishings will help the alcove blend with the rest of the room. If space is very tight, a stool that tucks fully under the desk is a neat option for shorter working sessions.

Common alcove mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a desk that is too deep: it projects beyond the chimney breast and breaks the clean line.
  • Ignoring the skirting: a desk that cannot sit tight to the back wall leaves an untidy gap.
  • Crowding the shelves: overfilled shelves above a desk make a small recess feel heavy.
  • Forgetting the cables: plan the route from devices to socket before the desk goes in.
  • Relying on ceiling light alone: shelves above often cast shadows, so add a dedicated light source.

Alcoves beyond the living room

Living rooms are not the only option. Bedrooms in older houses often have chimney breasts with alcoves, and a desk in one of them can double as a dressing table. Landings and hallways sometimes have small recesses that suit a narrow writing desk. Even a shallow cupboard can be turned into a compact office by removing the doors or fitting a desk inside and closing it at the end of the day.

Wherever you choose, think about how the space will feel when you are not working. A clear desk top and well styled shelves help the alcove look intentional at all times. When you are ready, browse desks, shelving and lighting across our full range at Furniture in Fashion, with free delivery to most UK mainland postcodes.

Frequently asked questions

What size desk fits in an alcove?

Measure the width at several points and use the smallest figure, allowing a small gap either side. Many alcoves suit desks between 80cm and 120cm wide.

How deep should an alcove desk be?

Ideally no deeper than the chimney breast projects, so it sits flush. Around 45cm to 60cm works for most setups.

Can I put a desk in an alcove with a radiator?

It is better to avoid covering the radiator. Use the other alcove, or position the desk so the radiator stays clear and air can circulate.

Should I use shelves or a cabinet above an alcove desk?

Floating shelves give a fitted look and keep the desk feeling open. A cabinet suits people who prefer to hide paperwork. Both work well if they fill the alcove width.
