New Build Homes and Bedroom Mirrors: The UK Space Squeeze Report

In new build bedrooms the mirror is a structural decision rather than a decorative one, and the format most buyers reach for first is often the least practical. Our 2026 analysis finds that where the Nationally Described Space Standard sets a minimum double bedroom of 11.5 square metres at 2.75 metres wide, a freestanding cheval mirror claims roughly the same floor depth as a slim chest of drawers. Wall mounted mirrors return that floor entirely, and mirrored wardrobe fronts remove the mirror as a separate object altogether. We set out sizing guidance by room type, explain why placement relative to the window matters more than mirror size, and address the fixing question that plasterboard partition walls raise in modern housing.
