A UK living room works at roughly 3.5m by 4m, but the measurements that decide comfort are the gaps rather than the square metres, according to new analysis published by Furniture in Fashion. The report finds that rooms which feel cramped are almost always failing one of three specifications: a main walkway of 75cm to 90cm, a sofa to coffee table gap of 40cm to 45cm, or a viewing distance of 2m to 2.5m. It also identifies the gap between the drawn floor plan and the usable placement zone, noting that chimney breasts, radiators and door swings routinely remove 30cm to 40cm of apparent space in older terraced housing.
