Pendant lights are bought for a surface rather than a room, according to a new analysis from UK modern furniture retailer Furniture in Fashion. The report finds that the length of the kitchen island or dining table below a pendant matters more than the floor area of the room, and that installing a single pendant over a long island is the most frequent sizing error in British homes. It sets out the spacing convention of dividing surface length into equal parts and insetting the end fittings, and explains why drop height above a table is measured from the tabletop rather than the floor, which allows pendants in rooms too low for a hanging fitting elsewhere.
