A large share of UK furniture spending goes on solving building problems rather than buying furniture, according to Furniture in Fashion's 2026 housing stock analysis. Britain's mix of pre 1919 terraces, purpose built flats and open plan new builds means standard contemporary furniture frequently does not suit the rooms it is bought for, and pieces that do not fit get replaced. The report sets out the arithmetic: UK mattress sizes are fixed, a king at 150 cm by 200 cm needs a room of roughly 3 m by 3.2 m for access on both sides, and the Nationally Described Space Standard's 11.5 sq m double bedroom minimum leaves limited room for wardrobe depth once a bed is in.
