Furniture in Fashion's 2026 analysis finds comfort depends almost entirely on where the low furniture goes: rooms that place beds, drawers and storage under the slope and keep the full height band clear feel generous, while identical rooms with tall furniture in the standing zone feel cramped. The report recommends mapping a loft in three height zones rather than square metres, the standing band above 1.9m, the seated band between 1.2m and 1.9m, and the eaves below, then assigning function to each. Building Regulations require 2 metres of headroom above the staircase pitch line, which shapes where the stair lands and therefore the room.
