The British guest room is rarely just a guest room, and the furniture inside it reflects its second job more than its first, according to new analysis from UK furniture retailer Furniture in Fashion. The report finds that spare bedrooms across the country absorb home offices, storage and hobby space, and that the apparent regional variation in guest room style is really a variation in the size of third bedrooms across different eras of housing. It sets out bed size against minimum room width, noting that choosing a small double at 120cm over a double at 135cm frequently converts an unusable room into a workable one. The analysis identifies four features that make a spare room feel prepared: a bedside surface, a light that switches off from the bed, somewhere to put a suitcase off the floor, and somewhere to hang a coat.
