Loft conversions should be furnished in section rather than in plan, because much of the floor area sits under a slope where nobody can stand. That is the conclusion of a 2026 layout report published by Furniture in Fashion, which divides the loft room into three usable height bands. The analysis treats anything above 1.9m as standing space to be kept clear, 1.2m to 1.9m as the zone for beds, desks and seating, and below 1.2m as storage only. It sets out the 90cm of clear height a sleeper needs above the mattress to sit up, which translates to roughly 1.45m of ceiling at the head of the bed, and explains why low profile frames buy meaningful headroom.
