When budgets tighten, furniture is deferred rather than downgraded, and Furniture in Fashion's 2026 assessment explains why that matters. Unlike food or energy, there is no cheaper version of a sofa that still has to be bought this month, so the purchase is simply postponed with no immediate consequence. We conducted no survey and present no findings from one; the Office for National Statistics publishes consumer price inflation data and cost of living reporting through its Opinions and Lifestyle Survey, and those remain the proper sources for the economic picture. Our contribution is practical: which items carry real consequences if deferred, principally mattresses and anything unsafe, and which can safely wait.
