The Households Data Hub: Free Charts and Figures for Journalists

The Households Data Hub: Free Charts and Figures for Journalists

UK furniture retailer Furniture in Fashion has published a households data hub for journalists that deliberately contains no statistics of its own. The company's research editors argue that authoritative household numbers already exist in public, published by named bodies including the Office for National Statistics through its Families and households releases, the English Housing Survey, HM Land Registry and the Met Office, and that reporters should take those figures directly from source rather than through a retailer. What the hub offers instead is the part of a homes story that is rarely documented anywhere useful: free to reuse specification tables covering standard UK bed sizes, dining capacity per person, chair and walkway clearances, seat heights, worktop and stool heights, wardrobe hanging depths and desk depths. The retailer states plainly that it does not commission survey fieldwork and will not present its own commercial data as national insight, because it describes customers rather than the country....

The Furniture Prices Data Hub: Free Charts and Figures for Journalists

Anyone reporting on furniture costs will find plenty of circulating numbers and very little verifiable data, so this hub publishes no price figures at all. What it publishes instead is the structure underneath them: the construction and hardware specifications that separate two visually similar pieces, the transport volume realities that made flat packing dominant rather than merely cheap, and the whole life factors that decide whether a lower initial outlay proves economical. Panel thickness, edge banding, back panel construction and drawer runner type predict durability in storage; frame, suspension and cushion specification do the same in upholstery, where buyers judge the fabric instead. We set out material behaviour across timber, engineered board, gloss, glass, stone, metal, fabric and leather on maintenance and durability. For official UK price movement, we direct press to the Office for National Statistics consumer price inflation release rather than to any retailer....

The Furniture Buying Data Hub: Free Charts and Figures for Journalists

This hub gives journalists and editors the fixed, checkable numbers that govern furniture buying in UK homes, and those numbers are dimensional rather than statistical. Standard mattress sizes from single at 90cm by 190cm through to super king at 180cm by 200cm, circulation clearances of around 75cm for main walkways and 60cm for bedside access, the 60cm of table edge each diner needs, storage depths that work in narrow rooms, and the standard internal door leaf of around 762mm that decides whether an item reaches the room at all. We are equally direct about what is absent: no market size, average spend, purchase intention or growth figures, because we hold no verified public source for them and will not model an estimate to fill the gap. Where a genuine national reference applies, such as the English Housing Survey or the Nationally Described Space Standard, we name it in the text....
