Solar Garden Lights Tested: Winter Performance of 20 UK Models

Solar Garden Lights Tested: Winter Performance of 20 UK Models

Solar garden lights underperform in a British winter for reasons that have nothing to do with build quality. In this report Furniture in Fashion explains the energy budget behind every solar light: short days, a low sun angle and frequent cloud shrink the charge a panel can collect at exactly the point when the hours of darkness it must cover are longest. We set out why siting is the decision that matters most, why panel tilt is far more consequential in winter than in summer, and why positions that are sunny in July can sit in shadow all day in December as low sun casts long shadows from fences and walls. We explain how cold reduces effective battery capacity, why charge management features that appear to limit output are what keep a light working, and which maintenance genuinely changes the outcome. A configuration table compares six types of solar light for UK winter use....

How Long Does a Garden Fence Last? UK Data by Timber Treatment

How Long Does a Garden Fence Last? UK Data by Timber Treatment

There is no published national figure for how long a UK garden fence lasts, and a new report from furniture retailer Furniture in Fashion argues that the question is answered by specification rather than by a single number. The analysis sets out the British and European standards framework that governs timber in exterior use, including BS EN 335 use classes, BS EN 351 for preservative treated timber and BS 8417 for specifying treatment against a desired service life, alongside guidance from the Wood Protection Association. It finds that fences overwhelmingly fail at the ground line rather than across the panel, that pressure treatment and dip treatment are not interchangeable, and that untreated saw cuts are one of the fastest routes for decay into otherwise well specified timber. Practical guidance covers concrete posts and gravel boards, drainage at the ground line, wind loading and the choice of panel style for exposed British gardens....
