Most UK first-time buyers choose an outdoor dining set one size too large for the paving they have, according to a new 2026 starter home analysis published by Furniture in Fashion. The report identifies paved area rather than garden area as the real constraint, since outdoor dining chairs concentrate weight on four small feet and sink on grass, and sets out the clearance figure buyers most often omit: roughly 90cm on every side of the table for chairs to be pulled out. On that basis a 120cm round table needs a paved square of about 3m, larger than the patio supplied with many new build starter homes. The analysis favours round tables on square patios because no corners project into the clearance zone, and advises matching parasol diameter to table size rather than maximising it.
