The snug has returned to British homes as a direct reaction to open plan living, and Furniture in Fashion finds that its defining quality is enclosure rather than decoration. City differences turn out to be room differences: in northern and Midlands terraces the snug is a reclaimed front parlour with a chimney breast dictating the layout, in London it is often a rear reception being separated again from a through room, and in estate housing it is the small ground floor study.
