Recliner Ownership in the UK: Survey of 1,000 Over-60s on Comfort & Mobility

We have not surveyed a thousand people and this report presents no figures as though we had. No published UK dataset measures recliner ownership among the over sixties, nor comfort or mobility outcomes by chair type, and our 2026 report says so at the outset before addressing the same question through specification and ergonomics instead. The substantive finding is that the reclining action is not the decisive variable: seat height is. Below roughly 43cm the effort of standing rises sharply, so a chair that reclines well but seats the user low will be harder to leave than a fixed armchair 10cm higher. We compare manual, powered, wall hugger and rise and recline mechanisms on the physical demand each places on the user, and explain why armrest height and firmness carry more of the sit to stand load than buyers expect.
