That is the central conclusion of this durability report, and it is a conclusion about physics rather than about brands. A lamp is a top heavy object on a small footprint, and a shade acts as a lever. We set out the specification points that decide whether a lamp survives a household with children and animals: base weight and diameter, the ratio of shade width to base width, cable length against the distance to the nearest socket, switch position, and shade material against dust and heat. Wall Lights in Family Homes: The UK Durability Survey 2026

Wall lights in family homes fail mechanically rather than electrically, and the fitting that gets replaced is rarely the one whose lamp has stopped working. That is the headline conclusion of the UK Durability Survey 2026 from furniture and lighting retailer Furniture in Fashion, which identifies projection from the wall, mounting height and the number of moving parts as the three factors that decide how long a wall light survives in a house with children. The report finds that fittings projecting beyond roughly 15cm into a circulation route are the most exposed, and that fixings in plasterboard loosen progressively under repeated knocks unless a stud or a rated hollow wall anchor takes the load. It recommends mounting above 180cm in narrow hallways and stairwells, choosing enclosed shades and fixed rather than adjustable fittings in family routes, and treating wall lighting as one layer in a scheme rather than the sole light source....
