Furniture in Fashion reports that a garden bench should be specified as architecture rather than as seasonal seating, because it is the one piece of outdoor furniture that stays in position through a British winter. Our 2026 analysis concludes that timber species and fixings decide service life far more than price or style: stainless steel and hot dip galvanised bolts outlast plated alternatives by a wide margin, and most benches that begin to rock have a metalwork problem rather than a wood problem. The report sets out seat geometry that works, allowing 50cm to 60cm of width per adult and a seat height of 43cm to 45cm, and matches bench specification to garden situations from small courtyards to exposed coastal positions.
