There is no published national figure for how long a UK garden fence lasts, and a new report from furniture retailer Furniture in Fashion argues that the question is answered by specification rather than by a single number. The analysis sets out the British and European standards framework that governs timber in exterior use, including BS EN 335 use classes, BS EN 351 for preservative treated timber and BS 8417 for specifying treatment against a desired service life, alongside guidance from the Wood Protection Association. It finds that fences overwhelmingly fail at the ground line rather than across the panel, that pressure treatment and dip treatment are not interchangeable, and that untreated saw cuts are one of the fastest routes for decay into otherwise well specified timber.
