UK Furniture Spend as a Share of Income: ONS Analysis by Decile

Furniture in Fashion has published an interpretive analysis of how furniture expenditure behaves across UK households, naming the Office for National Statistics Living Costs and Food Survey as the published source for spending by equivalised disposable income decile while declining to reproduce its figures second hand. The report argues that furniture spending is episodic rather than recurring, so annual averages describe neither the household furnishing an entire property at once nor the majority buying nothing in a given year. Housing tenure emerges as a stronger determinant than income alone: tenants in unfurnished properties buy everything at move in and favour transportable, dismantlable pieces, while owner occupiers phase purchases and can buy for the room.
