Furniture in Fashion reports that furniture spending in British households is released by events rather than seasons, and that the published statistics stop well short of what most coverage claims. The ONS runs a monthly retail sales index for household goods stores and seasonally adjusts it, tracks new furniture prices in its consumer price statistics and reports expenditure categories in its family spending publication, while HMRC counts monthly property transactions. None of them links a household event to a purchase or breaks spending down by product and month, so this report carries no average spend figures. Instead it identifies the three triggers that release furniture money, moving, mending and hosting, sets out a planning calendar anchored to the clock changes and the school year, and argues for allocating by hours of use: a bed serves around 56 hours a week, a dining chair a fraction of that.
