Comfort in a UK studio flat is decided by circulation rather than cushioning, according to the Studio Flat Comfort Index 2026 from modern furniture retailer Furniture in Fashion. The report finds that the studios which feel liveable are those that maintain a main walking route of 75cm to 90cm and preserve at least 60cm of clear access along one side of the bed, and that sofa depth is a more significant constraint than sofa width in single room living. Drawing on the Nationally Described Space Standard, which sets a minimum of 37 square metres for a one person dwelling with a shower room, the analysis sets out the clearances required for wardrobes, drawers, dining seats and circulation routes. It concludes that storage height rather than storage footprint is what recovers comfort in a studio, and that residents of rented and converted stock must let the furniture absorb compromises they cannot make to the building itself....
