UK Bed Frame Safety Standards Explained: BS EN 1725 & Fire Regulations

Two separate regimes govern bed safety in the UK and they are routinely confused, according to a new explainer from furniture retailer Furniture in Fashion. Fire safety is mandatory under the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988, which bring upholstered bed bases and headboards within scope and require permanent compliance labelling, with BS 7177 ordinarily used to demonstrate ignitability performance for mattresses, divans and bases. Structural safety, by contrast, rests on voluntary standards. The report clarifies that BS EN 1725, still widely cited in product listings, has been withdrawn from the British Standards catalogue, with test methods now addressed through BS EN 1957. It also sets out the stricter regime for bunk beds under BS EN 747 and the Bunk Beds (Entrapment Hazards) (Safety) Regulations 1987, and warns that fitting an over deep mattress can defeat guard rail protection entirely.
