A Brief History of the Deck Chair: From Ocean Liners to British Beaches

The deck chair survives because of what it does when nobody is sitting in it. A folding hardwood frame with a slung canvas seat collapses to a flat board and stacks dozens deep, and this report from Furniture in Fashion argues that the storage property, not the comfort, is the whole story. Ocean liner promenades needed seating that could be set out and cleared in minutes, and British beaches needed chairs that could be hired, counted and locked away overnight on ground that would not take a fixed leg.
