Coastal Furniture and Resale Value: The UK Data

Coastal furniture holds its value on the UK second hand market when it is built from solid timber, painted hardwood or natural rattan, and it loses value quickly when the look is printed onto laminate or board. Our 2026 report finds that construction, not styling, decides the outcome, because a second owner will only take on a piece that can be made to look good again. Oiled and painted solid wood can be sanded, filled and recoated; rattan panels can be rewoven; printed woodgrain cannot be repaired at all once an edge chips. In genuinely coastal properties, fixings and carcass material matter more than colour, since salt laden air corrodes untreated steel and humidity swells board material irreversibly. We also find that coastal pieces scaled for flats, bungalows and cottages find future buyers more readily than oversized ranges, and we set out the clearances that keep an open, light scheme working in a real British room....
