Display Cabinets and Ceiling Heights: The UK Proportion Report

Display cabinets are judged vertically, and in British homes ceiling height rather than floor area decides whether one succeeds. In this report, Furniture in Fashion sets out why older and newer housing present two entirely different proportion problems: period rooms with heights of 2.7m or more can carry a tall glazed cabinet and often look better for one, while modern rooms built at around 2.4m rarely can. The analysis offers working proportions matching cabinet height to ceiling height, explains why a unit reaching two thirds to three quarters of the wall height sits comfortably in most rooms, and shows how glazed sides and internal lighting reduce the visual mass of a large piece. It also covers the practical constraints that decide placement in real rooms, including chimney breast alcoves, skirting depth, radiator positions and door swing. Guidance follows on measuring alcoves at more than one height, resolving the wall above a cabinet, and fixing tall glazed furniture safely....
