UK Dining Chair Safety Standards Explained: BS EN 12520 & Fire Labels

Two separate requirements govern dining chairs sold in the UK and they are routinely confused, according to a new explainer from UK furniture retailer Furniture in Fashion. BS EN 12520 is the British adoption of the European standard covering strength, durability and stability for domestic seating, tested on the complete chair rather than on individual components. The Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 separately govern ignition resistance for upholstered items and require a permanent label attached to the chair plus display labelling at the point of sale.
