UK Mattress Fire Safety Explained: BS 7177 & Labelling Requirements

Furniture in Fashion has published a plain English explainer on UK mattress fire safety, setting out how BS 7177, the British Standard covering resistance to ignition of mattresses, mattress pads, divans and bed bases, works alongside the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988. The report explains the standard's hazard categories, with domestic mattresses tested in the low hazard category against a smouldering cigarette and a match flame equivalent, and progressively more severe categories applying to hotels, care settings and secure accommodation. It argues that contract grade mattresses are not a consumer upgrade, since they are engineered for shared use rather than household conditions.
