The report argues that hygiene in this category is governed by surface continuity and joint detail rather than by the material named on the label, since a cloth cleans only what it can reach. Six materials are compared on porosity, tolerance of household cleaners and characteristic weak point: thermoset plastic, thermoplastic, moulded wood with a sealed coat, lacquered solid timber, resin composite and stainless steel. The single most useful hygiene feature identified is a quick release hinge, which allows the seat to be lifted clear so the area around the fixings can be cleaned.
