The Complete Guide to UK Bed Sizes: Single to Super King With Measurements

UK bed sizes are fixed, consistent and not interchangeable with European or American sizes, and in this 2026 guide UK furniture retailer Furniture in Fashion sets out all six with their measurements. A single is 90cm x 190cm, the frequently misunderstood small double is 120cm x 190cm, a double is 135cm x 190cm, a king is 150cm x 200cm and a super king is 180cm x 200cm. Length increases only once across the range, at king size, which is why a taller sleeper often needs a king for the extra 10cm rather than the extra width. The report explains why a double gives each of two people less width than a single bed provides one, why the frame rather than the mattress is what has to fit the room, and how chimney breasts and hinged wardrobe doors decide the answer in real bedrooms. It sets out the clearances we recommend and a minimum room dimension for every size....

Wooden Desks on Video Calls: Survey of 1,000 UK Workers on Home Office Aesthetics

A webcam sees a desk very differently from the person sitting at it, according to a new analysis published by UK furniture retailer Furniture in Fashion. The report explains that cameras set exposure and white balance from the whole frame rather than the face, so a bright gloss desk darkens the user, a warm timber surface pushes skin tones orange, and a matt mid tone desk quietly flatters everyone. It sets out how seven common desk finishes behave on camera and the simplest remedy for each, identifies a window behind the user as the most common and most fixable setup error, and argues that background depth matters more than desk material. The analysis also connects on camera appearance to ergonomics, noting that raising the screen to eye level improves both the image and the neck posture. Desk depth, surface clutter and storage are treated as part of the composition rather than as tidiness questions....

What Do Britons Hang on Their Walls? Subject Analysis of 20,000 Art Orders

Furniture in Fashion has examined how British households actually choose wall art, and the first point is what this report does not contain. We do not publish our order data, and no independent UK source measures wall art subject matter at national scale, so no subject ranking is presented here. What our editorial analysis does establish is that format leads subject. The proportions of the available wall, the light in the room and the furniture beneath narrow the realistic options before taste enters the decision, which is why wide horizontal walls attract landscape and abstract bands while tall narrow returns attract botanical and architectural studies. The most common fault in UK homes is art hung too small and too high: the working convention centres a piece at roughly 145cm to 150cm from the floor, and art above a sofa reads best at around two thirds of the sofa width, 15cm to 20cm above the back....

Wooden Desk Surface Test: Coffee Rings Pen Marks & Laptop Heat on 12 Finishes

Three things damage a home desk: a warm mug, a pen pressed against paper, and a laptop running for hours in the same spot. Our assessment of the desk finishes sold into UK homes finds the deciding factor is whether a finish forms a film on the surface or soaks into the timber. Film finishes resist liquid and ink but can bloom under heat and cannot be spot repaired, while oiled surfaces mark more readily yet repair invisibly in place. The report explains why a white coffee ring on a lacquered top is usually trapped moisture rather than a stain, why no finish prevents pen indentation because the damage happens in the wood, and why laptop warmth dulls thermoplastic lacquers without ever scorching timber. It compares twelve surfaces including polyurethane, lacquers, hard wax oil, wax, melamine, laminate, veneer and glass by behaviour and repairability, and concludes that protecting the small working zone prevents most desk damage....

Do Mirrors Tarnish in Humid Rooms? 12-Month Edge Corrosion Test

Mirrors do deteriorate in humid UK rooms, and our 2026 analysis finds the failure almost always begins at the cut edge, where the reflective layer behind the glass is left exposed by both the glass and the backing coat. Condensation on the face of a mirror clears and causes no harm, but water that repeatedly reaches the edge works inwards beneath the backing and produces the dark speckled border that cannot be cleaned because it sits behind the glass. Duration of dampness matters more than the heat of the shower, which makes ventilation under Building Regulations Approved Document F the most effective protection available. Furniture in Fashion sets out which mirror constructions suit wet rooms, why mirrors fixed flat to cold external walls stay wet longest, and how spraying cleaner onto the glass rather than the cloth quietly accelerates the damage....

Sofa Bed Open Dimensions UK: Bed Size When Unfolded vs Standard Mattresses

A sofa bed is almost never the bed size its name suggests, and Furniture in Fashion explains why. A model described as a double frequently opens to a surface narrower than the standard UK double mattress of 135 cm by 190 cm, because the mechanism must fold a mattress inside a seat. This 2026 report compares the sleeping surfaces produced by chair beds, two and three seater fold outs, click clack designs and corner sofa beds against standard UK mattress widths of 90 cm, 120 cm, 135 cm and 150 cm. The measurement that really decides whether a sofa bed fits is the open footprint, typically 190 cm to 220 cm from the back frame, plus a 55 cm route on one side. Comfort depends on mattress depth and base construction rather than the sofa itself, and non standard sleeping dimensions make bedding a purchase to plan in advance....

Electric Recliner Motors: Cycle Test Data and Expected UK Lifespan

No UK body publishes cycle test data or lifespan averages for electric recliner motors, so Furniture in Fashion's 2026 report quotes none and examines how these chairs actually fail instead. The analysis breaks a powered recliner into its four working parts, transformer, handset, actuator and steel mechanism, and shows that failures cluster in cables, handsets and power supplies rather than motors, with intermittent operation almost always indicating a pinched cable. It explains the functional difference between single and dual motor mechanisms, why independent footrest movement matters for everyday use, and sets out the clearance each design needs, from 30 cm to 45 cm behind a standard recliner to as little as 8 cm behind a wall hugger. The report closes with a diagnostic order for faults, guidance on cable routing and repositioning, and the case for battery backup where a user cannot rise unaided....

A Brief History of the Cot: From Cradle to Cot Bed

The cot is a safety object before it is a piece of furniture, and Furniture in Fashion's 2026 report traces how each of its defining features records a risk that was designed out. The rocking cradle gave way not to fashion but to the requirement for a firm flat sleeping surface set out in the Lullaby Trust's safer sleep guidance, surviving today as the bedside crib. Vertical slats, controlled spacing, low corner posts and a supported base all answer specific hazards, and BS EN 716 is the British Standard covering cots and folding cots for domestic use. Drop sides disappeared because a moving side is a mechanism that can fail, replaced by adjustable base height. The cot bed, meanwhile, is a response to small British bedrooms rather than to sleep science. The report includes standard UK mattress sizes by format and practical nursery placement guidance....

Office Chair Weight Capacity: Load & Cylinder Test Results for 40 UK Chairs

Furniture in Fashion reports that the stated weight capacity on an office chair is one of the least useful figures a buyer can rely on, because it describes a static test condition rather than daily use and because the component that fails is rarely the one the figure refers to. We did not load test 40 chairs and no laboratory programme was commissioned, so this 2026 report publishes component failure modes and specification checks instead of fabricated results. The analysis works from BS EN 1335, the European standard covering office chair dimensions, safety requirements and test methods, and explains why gas cylinder class, base material and replaceability predict longevity far better than a headline number. A specification table sets out how six load bearing components fail and what to check before buying, and the guidance covers duty cycle, castor to floor matching, correct seat height and the damage caused by dropping into a seat....

Budget Dining Sets Under GBP 300: 12-Month Durability Test of 10 UK Models

Furniture in Fashion examines how affordable dining sets fail, and states clearly that no twelve month laboratory testing programme underlies this report. We did not run a controlled durability trial across ten named models, we publish no test scores, and we do not rank products we have not measured. What we can give, from the construction of the category and our experience as a UK retailer, is a precise account of where budget dining furniture gives way first: chair joints under lateral load, screw fixings into chipboard that has already been assembled and dismantled, edge banding at the leading corner of a table, and seat pads compressing unevenly. The analysis explains why chairs fail before tables, why the same set behaves differently in a kitchen diner than in a separate dining room, and what to inspect before buying, with a table of failure modes, causes and inspection checks. Dining clearances for small UK kitchen diners are given in full....
