Timepieces are important in the décor of any home. From tiny desktop clocks, to great, stand up case and grandfather clocks, these monitors of minutes and hours provide a valued service and an attractive accent, when they are tastefully chosen. Some of my favorite clocks are wall clocks. They don’t require the space of a standing clock, nor do they occupy a spot on top of another piece of furniture . Hanging on the wall, they allow you to tell the time and provide you with a good-looking piece of mounted “decorative art” to admire, all at the same time. Wall clocks  can range from the traditional classic-looking wooden clocks with their long, shiny brass pendulums encased behind glass, to those fun, whimsical carved cuckoo clocks imported for our amusement. No matter how big your house is, or how large your closet, you just never seem to have enough space for everything. It seems to me that the people who design houses put far too much emphasis on “open space” and forget the fact that we have things we need to put away. That’s one of the reasons I’m so glad that furniture manufacturers are paying attention to our needs. They give us unique, necessary storage options like shoe cabinets and other lifesavers to make the chaos of our closets a little more manageable. Shoe cabinets  are like stand-alone closets, but just for shoes. They can be found in different styles and finishes. How you furnish your office can influence how much work you get done in a day. These days more “work” is done sitting at a desk than was once done in an assembly line. Since the advent of the computer and its being whittled down to personal size, the “job” market has been forever altered. More “workers” in a company are desk sitting all day long. So, it only stands to reason that the home office furniture they use will influence on their level of productivity. A desk used to be large, cumbersome and meant to hold a typewriter. I’m not sure who thought up the nests of tables  that have been popular for as long as I can remember. These tables come in sets, usually three or four, and they are made in sizes ranging from small to quite large. The smaller ones fit under the next one up in size and all of them can “nest” beneath the largest. This gives them a lot of tabletop area without your having to sacrifice a great deal of space when they are not needed. They can also provide you with some fun decorating ideas for your next get-together. I like nests of tables when I have friends over and they bring their children. I seat the adults at the dining table and give each child the table most suitable in size for their own special seat. For chairs, I substitute large pillows. This makes my little visitors feel a lot more special, and allows us grown-ups some space to talk and sip wine without those little eyes constantly on us, and those tiny ears picking up every word. You’ve got kids. Great! Children are such joys and yet, with the birth of your first child, you probably came to the stark realization that with the coming of children, the way you furnish your home had to undergo some changes. Let’s face it. There is no practical reason for owning a white micro-suede covered sofa, loveseat and side chair if your three year old is going to be drinking cherry-red pop on it. Spills happen. Dirt and finger paint and mysterious discoloring substances you cannot identify seem to be a child’s gift to living room furniture. So, what do you do? For starters, give up on white furniture. You can spray enough Scotchguard® to protect Fort Knox on it and somehow, a toddler will find a way through its defenses. Also, easily cleaned furniture fabrics are much more practical and much easier to get the gooey stuff off of. Try for some low knap, smooth fabric and yes, do treat it with a stain repellant.
