Make your dining room the best for this christmas 2017

Make your dining room the best for this christmas 2017

is getting closer than ever. And your plans for the perfect family get-together should be starting to take shape nicely ahead of the forthcoming rush. Getting the house ready forms the backbone of those pre-festive preparations, and the dining room is more important than most. After all, it’s where you’ll be spending the most memorable lunch of the entire year. Make your dining room the best for this christmas In truth, the rewards of designing a great dining room extend beyond the Christmas period. This space is crucial for daily family interactions. However, December 25th is the perfect excuse to make those interior upgrades. Here’s how to make that transformation in time. Colour & Space Consciously or otherwise, colour schemes have a huge impact on your interactions with a room. Bright shades naturally encourage a happier atmosphere. For a contemporary flavour, many households opt for three off-white walls complemented by one feature wall. This can be paint, wallpaper, or textured materials. Given that the dining room is a space for family activities, you also want to create the perception of space. Encouraging more natural light will work wonders, especially as the winter period can be quite gloomy at the best of times. Another top trick...

Despite Brexit Online Furniture Sales Continue to Grow

Despite Brexit Online Furniture Sales Continue to Grow

Despite the looming inevitability of Brexit, it seems that shoppers in the UK are still no stranger to spending their money on the necessities in life such as online furniture. In fact, online sales have seen an increase and many major furnishing companies such as Furniture in Fashion are experiencing tremendous growth thanks to online sales. Despite brexit online furniture sales continue to grow. It’s not just furniture stores either. Online jewellery sales are surging and many retailers in general that focus on digital platforms are confident that their sales will continue to increase despite Brexit getting closer. This is in wake of the widespread reports that Brexit would force British shoppers into a strike of sorts. Even currency worth has stabilised and overseas sales are as strong as ever. For all our fears of consumer confidence dropping, it doesn’t seem to be the case and online shoppers are as vigilant as ever when it comes to finding great deals.   Online Sales vs Retail   Online sales have always had an advantage over retail store sales. This is because online stores can cut out the costs involved with renting a property, paying for more staff, security and so on. In fact, online stores tend...

Students from Lahti University design furniture for displacement victims

Students from Lahti University design furniture for displacement victims

The ongoing refugee crisis and the effects of natural disaster have become increasingly important topics for designers in recent years. This is why it interested us to read Dezeen magazine’s report this week about 10 students from Lahti University of Applied Sciences in Finland and their designs for a collection of essential furniture items for victims of displacement. The designs are the fruit of a research project called Rehome, which gave students from the school’s Institute of Design the responsibility of creating temporary products for those suddenly forced to leave their home without belongings.   “Manufactured automatically with the lowest costs possible”   One of the students, Iida Nordgren, said to Dezeen: “The main idea behind Rehome was to design temporary products that could provide an answer to humans’ primary needs when suddenly rehoused. The furniture designed within Rehome can be manufactured automatically with the lowest costs possible. For example, a cardboard bed can be manufactured around 3,500 pieces in one hour – and no tools are required for assembling.”   The students devised a list of things that they described as catering to “the most urgent human needs”, which they identified as sleeping arrangements, privacy and social interaction. This led to their decision to use...

Shoe cabinet for small spaces

Shoe cabinet for small spaces

As a homeowner, utilising space in an effective manner is one of the most crucial aspects of interior design. A home that boasts this quality will feel bigger and more modern, providing the homely vibe that’s desired by all.Creating a winning aesthetic in open spaces is easy. The real challenge comes when floor plans include restricted spaces and design quirks. Filling those in a productive manner is the hallmark of great design, and a shoe cabinet could be the ideal solution.   Why A Small Shoe Cabinet?   Unlike many of the alternatives, a small shoe cabinet genuinely serves a purpose. Keeping your footwear together in one place in a tidy fashion won’t only improve this space. It’ll also enhance the area(s) where those items are currently stored. It isn’t practical to fill those small spaces with room-defining features. Likewise, decorative pieces are unlikely to offer their full appeal when confined to those areas. Choosing furniture or products that complement the room rather than define it is advised, which is why shoe cabinets are a great addition.   Aside from the interior design benefits, a shoe cabinet can aid daily activities. This is especially true when you have kids, as this type of product removes the hassle...

Are microflats the answer to London’s affordable housing shortage?

Are microflats the answer to London’s affordable housing shortage?

One of the greatest debates of our times has undoubtedly been about how we can tackle the increasing shortage of affordable residential property across the UK – particularly in the most in-demand city centres such as London. Could the emergence of microflats be the answer? That question played on our minds recently as we read about the regeneration specialists U+I, and their claim that the development of tiny flats in areas of currently largely unaffordable housing provision could help to revive communities presently being “hollowed out”.   Wealthy buyers continuing to acquire homes in the capital   Anyone who walks around certain areas of central London these days will probably have some sympathy with the oft-voiced frustration that rich investors from outside the capital are increasingly snapping up property that is then often being left empty for months. Indeed, a report last month commissioned by the Mayor of London stated that foreign investors purchased 13.2% of all property in the capital sold between 2014 and 2016. Meanwhile, according to the Government’s latest English Housing Survey, home ownership levels across England are at a 30-year low, and the country hasn’t had this many private renters since the 1960s.   So, should a new generation of hardworking professionals for whom...

A bookcase doesn’t have to be just for books!

A bookcase doesn’t have to be just for books!

There's great scope for versatility with our furniture here at Furniture in Fashion, and we would certainly urge you to resist simply using such pieces for the most obvious purposes.   Consider your bookcase, for example – what possessions of yours could it display, besides your favourite novels? We’ve got some tips below to help you to come up with answers to this question.   Get rid of unhelpful clutter There could be various items around the rooms of your home that are unjustly concealed or simply look out of place. Perhaps a beautiful watercolour painting of your hometown has been left in the attic, or a gorgeous vase is in a teenager's bedroom, where it is often ignored.   Gather all of those objects in the space where your bookcase is. Of course, you should also have, at close hand, all of the books that you intend to keep in your bookcase. This situation should help you to judge where you can place your tomes and the potential for complementing them with seemingly unrelated objects.   Resist a top-heavy approach If the number of books is actually relatively low given your bookcase's size, now is the time to look for the visually ‘heaviest’ of your gathered accessories. Place this...

What kind of computer desk would be best for you?

What kind of computer desk would be best for you?

If you often spend time using a computer at home, having the right computer desk on which to display and use your machine can be crucial, not least given that this can help to ensure your comfort when you are spending many successive hours typing away.     Here are some tips for choosing the right computer desk.   Consider your own priorities   You might already have good ideas for what you would like in a desk. You might be eager to ensure that it is durable, and thus capable of withstanding regular, heavy use over a long period of time. A pleasing design could be a big priority for you, too - as could a relatively low price.   Nonetheless, you may later find that as your search for the most suitable computer desk intensifies, some of these priorities are worth dropping, as some features might not be so necessary after all.   Measure where you intend the computer desk to go   If you are thinking of a particular space in which to place your desk, measure the dimensions of the space before you start shopping for a desk. If you are inexperienced with measuring in this way, you could sit in a standard chair and record the floor-to-knee distance.   Allow...

What should you look for in a bedside table?

What should you look for in a bedside table?

When considering the most suitable bedside table to buy for your sleeping spot, it pays to factor in both prettiness and practicality. While a gorgeous unit could seem ultimately pointless if it leaves your bedside lamp out of arm's length, you still want something that isn't visually jarring in your bedroom. Here are a few tips for what to bear in mind when you are comparing bedside cabinets.   The bottom line...

How to ensure you buy the right wardrobe for you

How to ensure you buy the right wardrobe for you

How to ensure you buy the right wardrobe for you   There aren’t many more important pieces of furniture in the home than the wardrobe. It’s one of the biggest, as well as one of the most frequently used – so how can you be sure of purchasing the wardrobe that best matches both your aesthetic and practical needs?   First, determine what you do need   If you already have a wardrobe in particular, it is crucial to ask yourself whether a wardrobe is the best purchase for your requirements, or whether you would be better served by a different piece of furniture. If you simply need more storage space, a chest of drawers may be the better choice.   Alternatively, you may go for a wardrobe that also incorporates a couple of drawers, or perhaps a taller wardrobe, or one with a greater amount of shelf or hanging space.   Size matters – but bigger isn’t necessarily better   The rule of thumb for choosing the most suitable size of wardrobe is to go for as big as you need, but not so big that you are unable to fit it in your room. The wardrobe’s specific dimensions really matter here – those with small bedrooms, for...
