Why brightness is the wrong target

The eye adapts to the brightest thing in its field of view. A powerful floodlight aimed outward from a wall becomes that brightest thing, and everything beyond its beam falls into a darkness that is functionally deeper than if the light were not there at all. Plan the scheme as a sequence rather than as a set of fittings.
