Perfect Lighting For The Perfect Look

We often pay a great deal of attention to the walls, flooring, fixtures and furniture while designing homes. Little do we realize that we are ignoring an important aspect of designing- lighting? Perfect lighting creates the perfect ambience that is desired. Incorrect lighting has the power to minimize the effects of even the most attractive interiors.

Perfect Lighting For The Perfect Look

Other than lighting up a room, proper lighting has a huge effect on our overall wellbeing and is essential for better working conditions. Regardless of the size of the space to be lighted, how you light up the room can make all the difference in the appearance and its functions.

The size of the room and the room type will determine whether you need ambient, task or accent lighting. Sometimes simply adding a layer of light can dramatically increase the quality of light in your home. Adding a dimmer switch will allow for more flexibility with your lighting system.

Perfect Lighting For The Perfect Look

Considering the specific tasks and lighting requirements for each space is the best way to address your lighting needs. A mix of light sources at different levels creates a flattering atmosphere. Let us take a room by room tour to decide on the best way to light up your home.

Entry/Foyer: As soon as one enters a home, it is the foyer that one encounters. The foyer sets the tone for your home. Ambient light with a couple of accent light sources are most advisable. If you have the space, go in for a chandelier or table lamp.

Living Room: A mix of ambient light with accent lights will create magic in your living room. Ideally three out of the four corners of the room should be lit. Focal points in the room should be emphasized with accent lighting. Ambient lighting options that can be used in the living room are ceiling fans, chandeliers, pendant lights or torchiere floor lamps.

Perfect Lighting For The Perfect Look

Dining area: A chandelier or a pendant is the most practical as well as decorative option for this space. Extra ambient and accent lighting can be added for a subtle glow. This can be done by placing table lamps on the side board or wall sconces.

Kitchen: Overhead lighting with additional under cabinet task lighting are most ideal for kitchens. If the kitchen has an island, then a single pendant or a row of mini pendants over the island are ideal for task or accent lighting.

Bedroom: This room calls for lighting which will evoke a feeling of calm and comfort. Reading in bed will require bedside table lamps or wall sconces mounted by the bedside. For the sitting or work space in the room, table lamps are most ideal.

Bathroom: Vanity light above the mirror or a pair of sconces flanking the mirror are still an option many home owners prefer. Chandeliers for a glamorous feel or fans with lights for ventilation and overhead lights is the choice of many homeowners today.

There is no limit to the number of things that can be done with lighting to provide improved functionality and to create a perfect ambience.
