Not every veneer problem needs a new sheet. Three common issues can be repaired in place, and doing so is far quicker.
Lifting at an edge can often be re glued: slide a thin knife under the loose section, work a little wood glue in, then clamp with a block and a sheet of baking paper to stop the block sticking. Bubbles can be treated by slitting along the grain with a sharp blade, injecting glue with a syringe and pressing flat. Before committing, establish what lies beneath. Solid timber and quality plywood are ideal substrates and will accept new veneer well. Medium density fibreboard is fine provided it is dry and intact. Chipboard is workable but fragile: if it has swollen with water, it will have lost its structure and no amount of veneering will rescue it. Press a fingernail into a hidden area. If it crumbles, the piece may not be worth the work.
Tools and materials
You will need veneer to suit the piece, a sharp craft knife or veneer saw, a straight edge, a household iron or heat gun, a scraper, abrasive paper in a range of grits, a sanding block, a veneer roller or a hard rubber roller, contact adhesive or PVA veneer glue, masking tape, clamps and flat boards for pressing, and a finish such as oil, wax or lacquer.
Choose veneer thickness with the method in mind. Thin paper backed veneer is easier to handle and works well with contact adhesive. Thicker raw veneer looks better on edges and sands more forgivingly but needs pressing.
Step one: removing the old veneer
Work on a protected surface with the piece stable. Remove hardware, drawers and any loose trim first, and note where each fixing came from.
Set a household iron to a medium heat with no steam initially. Place a damp cloth over a section of veneer and run the iron over it. The combination of heat and moisture softens the original glue, which on older furniture is often animal glue and releases readily. Work a wide scraper or putty knife under the softened edge and lift slowly, keeping the blade shallow so it does not gouge the substrate.
Take small sections at a time. Trying to lift a whole table top in one go usually tears the substrate. If a section resists, reapply heat and moisture rather than forcing it.
Modern furniture often uses synthetic adhesives that do not soften as easily. In that case a heat gun on a low setting can help, but keep it moving to avoid scorching, and be ready to accept that some sections may need careful scraping or sanding instead.
Step two: preparing the substrate
This is where the time should go. Scrape off all remaining glue residue, then sand the whole surface flat. Use a sanding block rather than your hand so you do not create shallow dips, and work through the grits until the surface is even and smooth.
Check flatness with a straight edge held across the surface in several directions. Light showing underneath means a hollow, which needs filling with a fine wood filler and sanding flush once cured. Any high spot needs sanding down. New veneer is thin and will not bridge a defect: it will reproduce it.
Repair damaged corners and edges at this stage too. A small piece of timber glued in and shaped flush is better than filler on a corner that will be handled.
Finally, vacuum and wipe the surface. Dust trapped under veneer creates visible pimples in the finished face.
Step three: cutting the new veneer
Lay the veneer over the surface and mark it with around twenty five millimetres of overhang on each side. Cut with a sharp blade against a straight edge, scoring several light passes rather than trying to cut through in one. Veneer splits if you rush it.
Grain direction matters. On a table top or a drawer front, the grain should normally run along the longest dimension. On a cabinet side, it usually runs vertically. Getting this wrong is the detail that makes an otherwise good repair look wrong.
If the surface is wider than your veneer sheet, you will need to join two pieces. Cut both edges dead straight, butt them together, and hold the seam with veneer tape on the show face before glueing. A well made seam along a straight grain line is almost invisible. A seam that wanders is the first thing anyone will notice.
Step four: bonding
Contact adhesive method
Apply adhesive to both the substrate and the back of the veneer, then leave both to become touch dry as the instructions specify. Because contact adhesive grabs immediately, lay strips of dowel or thin battens across the substrate, position the veneer on top of them, align it carefully, then remove the battens one at a time from the centre outwards, pressing as you go.
Roll the whole surface firmly with a veneer roller, working from the centre to the edges to expel air. Pay extra attention to the perimeter, where lifting is most likely later.
Glue and press method
Spread PVA veneer glue thinly and evenly on the substrate, position the veneer, cover with baking paper, then a flat board, and clamp across the whole area. Even pressure is essential: clamps only at the edges will leave the centre unbonded. For large panels, weight distributed across a stiff board works better than a few clamps.
Leave it clamped for the full curing time. Removing pressure early is a common cause of bubbles appearing days later.
Iron on method for paper backed veneer
Some paper backed veneers can be applied with heat activated adhesive: brush glue on both faces, let it dry, then bond it with a warm iron working steadily across the surface. It is a manageable method for smaller pieces such as drawer fronts and needs no clamps.
Step five: trimming and finishing
Once cured, trim the overhang. Work with a very sharp blade held flat against the edge, cutting in the direction that presses the veneer against the substrate rather than away from it. Cutting outward lifts and chips the edge.
Finish the edges with a sanding block held at a slight angle, always sanding inward. Then sand the whole face lightly, starting around one hundred and eighty grit and finishing at two hundred and forty. Veneer is thin, so keep the pressure light and stop as soon as the surface is smooth. It is easy to sand through, particularly at corners.
Now finish to match the rest of the piece. Oil deepens the grain and is easy to maintain. Wax gives a soft sheen and suits older furniture. Lacquer is the most durable for a table top that sees daily use. Test the finish on an offcut first, because veneer can take colour differently from solid timber of the same species.
Edge banding and exposed edges
Edges are where amateur veneering is usually detected. Apply veneer to the edges before the top face where possible, so the top sheet overlaps and covers the joint. Alternatively, use matching iron on edge banding, which is straightforward and gives a neat result on straight runs.
Round over the very edge minimally with fine abrasive. A knife sharp veneer edge chips the first time something knocks it.
Knowing when to stop
Veneer work rewards realism. If a piece has a swollen chipboard core, extensive water damage or joints that have failed, the veneer is the least of its problems. Sentimental pieces may still justify the effort, but a mass produced cabinet with a collapsed substrate rarely does.
