If you are wondering – how to find a rental property that allows pets, the most obvious answer would be – avoid listings with ‘no pets allowed’ warning. If the owners are so determined not to have pets in their home, there is no change that you will able be to persuade them against it. Though, of course, not every listing has a similar warning – but it does not mean that the owner is pet-friendly. On the whole, here are several tips on how to find a rental property that allows pets and how to introduce this subject.

Broaden your search criteria

There are plenty of homeowners that do not appreciate pets in their homes, so finding a pet-friendly property in a limited area might be a bit of a problem. So, you should be prepared to broaden your search parameters – the bigger area you are considering, the bigger your chances of finding a pet-friendly landlord / lady – this is just basic logic.

Do not start conversation with a pet

When you are looking at the for-rent property, do not start your conversation with the fact that you have pet. Ask all kinds of standard questions about utilities bills, water and heating systems, and so on and so forth. Let the owner ask you questions about your income, occupation, lifestyle – whatever he/she has in mind. Then bring your pet up.

Find out the owner’s reason against pets

If the owner is against pets, ask why. Some people may have particular concerns, which may not be the case with your pet. So, there may be a chance to reason with the owner – after all, few people hate pets on principle.

Do not lie about your pet’s perfect behaviour

At this point, it is crucial not to lie about your pet’s behaviour. Do not try to over-promote your little friend – just stay honest. If you have a frolic dog with a sweet tooth for wooden furniture  corners, there is no possible way to conceal it in the long run. Surely, no one would like to have his living room  trashed, so stay honest.

Do not try to conceal the fact that your have pets

Also, you should never try to conceal the fact that you have pets. Ever. This may lead to potential problems in the future, so even if you have fallen in love with a ‘no pets allowed’ property, you should still move on and look further.

Carefully read the contract

It is also important to carefully read the contract  – even if the owner has allowed you to bring the pet in. Some standard writers have clauses about pets, so it is crucial that you have the owner’s permission – both in words and in writing. This will also be useful if you plan on having a pet, or even if you simply considering such probability.

Make an online posting

To boost your search a little, you can post a short ad online, saying that a young couple / person with a marvelous well-behaved kitty/ doggie is looking for an apartment.
