Although the market offers all types of shoe racks in terms of designs, prices and colors, you might not find the right option for your home. If you are in desperate need of proper storage for shoes that may be clogging a closet, front porch, or hallway then there is no better way to house your shoes and get rid of clutter than to build your own shoe rack. The benefit of building your own shoe rack is that you can customize it, not only in terms of design, but also size. You can build your own shoe rack  as per the exact requirement. You will find several ways to build your own shoe rack, but a nifty way to make a cheap and attractive shoe storage rack is to use wood dowel and gingerbread trim.

Here is a simple process to build your own shoe rack:

To build your own shoe rack, cut the gingerbread trim into two equal pieces. Just in case you don’t know, gingerbread trim is usually used as decorative element on porch railings, awnings, balustrades and cornices and is available in most garden, home, or building centers. For a shoe rack, a piece of gingerbread trim that is 10 inches high by 30 inches long is enough, making two pieces for the side of the rack around 15 inches by 10 inches. Now, cut the wood dowel into two lengths of 50 inches each. You can adjust the length of the dowel if you want a longer or shorter shoe rack. Now, stand one of the pieces of gingerbread trim upright and decide on the best place for the dowel to go. The best way to determine the place for the dowel to go is to use the shoes. In general, the dowel lengths should be around 7 inches apart, with one set higher than the other, at an angle of approximately 30 degrees. Mark the position for the dowel.

Now, take the gingerbread pieces and place them on top of each other, with the dowel position markings on top. Use a drill and form a 1/2 inch wide hole at each of the dowel position points all the way through both of the gingerbread trim pieces. Wipe glue on the inside of each of the drilled holes. Stand the gingerbread trim upright and insert the two pieces of dowel between. Make sure that the ends of the dowel are flush with the outside of the gingerbread trim. Let this arrangement dry. Once dry, sand the shoe storage rack and paint if desired.

This is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to build your own shoe rack. You can make multiple shoe racks and have them go all the way up the wall with this method. This shoe rack can help you store all your shoes in an organized manner with easy access. You can build your own shoe rack for all rooms in your house to keep floor space free of clutter.
