A well built dining table will comfortably hold between 90kg and 180kg of evenly distributed weight across its surface. Those figures apply to weight spread across the top. Concentrated load is a different question entirely, and it is where most damage happens. Distributed Load Versus Point Load

This distinction explains almost everything about table strength.

Distributed load is weight spread over a wide area: a table laid for eight with plates, glasses, serving dishes and a couple of casseroles. Even a generous spread rarely exceeds 40kg, so a normal meal uses a fraction of any table’s capacity.

Point load is weight concentrated in one small area. An adult sitting on the corner of a table puts perhaps 80kg through an area the size of two hands, at the point furthest from the supports. That is the situation that cracks glass, splits joints and loosens legs.

The practical rule is that tables are strong in the middle and vulnerable at the edges. If you need to place something very heavy on a table, put it over a leg or over the centre of the frame rather than out at a corner.

Capacity by Material

The Base Matters More Than the Top

Can You Sit or Stand on a Dining Table?

You should not, and it is worth saying plainly because it is the single most common cause of table damage in homes.

Standing on a table to change a light bulb or hang decorations applies the entire body weight through a small area, often near an edge, and adds dynamic force as you shift your balance. Use a step ladder instead.

Many dining tables now double as home offices. Monitors, laptops and printers together rarely exceed 25kg, which is well within capacity for any table.

Where people get into trouble is with genuine workshop use: clamping, hammering or working on heavy items. Impact and clamping force are both concentrated loads, and they will mark or damage the surface long before capacity becomes an issue. Use a board or a proper bench.

A table that rocks is not necessarily weak. In most cases the floor is uneven rather than the table being at fault, and the rocking simply means three of the four feet are carrying all the load.
