The Figure to Work To
A dining table needs roughly 300 to 400 lumens per square metre of table surface for comfortable eating, rising to around 500 lumens per square metre if the table doubles as a work or homework surface. For a typical 180cm by 90cm table, that means a total output of approximately 500 to 650 lumens for dining and up to 800 lumens when the table is used for tasks.
Those figures apply to the light reaching the table, not the total output of every fitting in the room. Shade design, mounting height and wall colour all affect how much of a lamp output actually lands where you need it.
Understanding Lumens Rather Than Watts
Lumens measure the light a lamp produces. Watts measure the energy it consumes. With incandescent bulbs the two tracked closely enough that people used watts as shorthand, but LED lighting has broken that relationship entirely.
A modern LED producing 800 lumens draws around 8 to 10 watts. The equivalent incandescent would have drawn 60 watts. If you are replacing older fittings, ignore the wattage on the old bulb and look only at the lumen figure on the new one.

Calculating for Your Table

An opaque shade that directs light straight down delivers a high proportion of the lamp output onto the surface. A translucent shade sends light in every direction, so a good deal of it illuminates the ceiling and walls instead. With a diffusing shade you may need to increase the lamp output by a third to achieve the same brightness on the table.
Open bottomed metal pendants are the most efficient at delivering light downwards. Fabric drum shades are the least, though they give a softer overall effect that many people prefer in a dining room.
Reflective interiors help. A shade with a white or brass lined interior bounces more light down than one lined in matte black, sometimes by a noticeable margin.
Mounting Height Changes the Result
Light spreads as it travels, so the same lamp gives a different result at different heights.
Hung at 75cm above the table, a pendant creates a bright, tightly defined pool. Raised to 100cm, the same lamp covers more area at lower intensity. Neither is wrong, but if you raise the fitting you may need more output to maintain the same brightness on the surface.
Room finishes contribute too. Pale walls and a white ceiling reflect light back into the space, effectively increasing the useful output. Dark walls, exposed brick and deep colours absorb it, and rooms finished that way often need 20 to 30 per cent more light than the calculation suggests.
Colour Temperature Alongside Brightness
Brightness and warmth are separate settings and both need attention.
For dining, choose lamps rated at 2700K. This is a warm white that flatters food and skin tones and reads as relaxed in the evening. Some people prefer 3000K, which is marginally crisper and works well in kitchen diners where the lighting needs to serve cooking as well as eating.
Avoid anything above 4000K over a dining table. Cool white light suits garages and utility spaces but makes a meal feel institutional.
Colour rendering matters as well. Look for a CRI figure of 90 or above where possible. High CRI lamps show colours accurately, which makes a genuine difference to how food looks on the plate.
Dimming Solves the Dual Purpose Problem
